Dr. Andrea Beaton
Co-Director and Senior Investigator
Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Dr. Andrea Beaton, a co-founder of the RRCU, has been collaborating with investigators in Uganda for over 10 years, co-authoring over 60 publications with the Ugandan team. As the RRCU’s co-Director, Dr. Beaton has helped secure dozens of grants for RRCU-based work and build RRCU’s global network of RHD researchers. Dr. Beaton is committed to mentoring the next generation of clinician-scientists, and over 30 early career students, nurses and physicians have received direct mentoring through this collaboration.
Dr. Beaton’s dedication to reducing the global burden of RHD began as a cardiology fellow, when she spent several months conducting echocardiographic screenings in Kampala schools. During that study she found that nearly 2 out of every 100 children were affected by RHD, and she saw first-hand the devastating consequences of this largely preventable disease. It was also during this time that she forged a friendship and research partnership with Dr. Okello, that has grown into the RRCU of today.
Dr. Beaton earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychobiology at Centre College (Kentucky, USA), a Medical Degree from the University of Louisville (Kentucky, USA), and a Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Science from the George Washington University (District of Columbia, USA). Dr. Beaton is a Pediatric Cardiologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (Ohio, USA) and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati (Ohio, USA). Dr. Beaton also leads the Global RHD Research and Advocacy Center at Cincinnati Children’s
